Life as a local in the Solomon Islands

Where to stay in the Solomon Islands as a resident.

Honiara – Renting

If you are planning on staying here in Honiara, its best to register with a local estate agency . There are only a small handful of agents in the whole of the Solomon Islands. Most rental is through word-of-mouth as it is a very small place to live. If you are an expat and thinking of renting, I would recommend you follow these guidelines when looking for your ideal property.

Gizo – Renting

Agents in Honiara service for the islands of Gizo and the rest of the Solomon Islands, although there are usually not that many options to choose from as they rarely come available. If you are looking for something here, please send me a message and I can connect you to family who rent out their properties there on the island. It helps to know people!

Gizo – Things to do.

  • Dive Gizo – for snorkelling and diving.
  • Visit the Conservation Centre at Nusa Tupe Airport Island and see the giant clam shells. These are the largest clamshells in the world and are endangered.
  • Snorkel, Kaya, Paddle Board and Dive at Fatboys Resort. You can stay with them and get the facilities for free or pay for a boat-ride, have lunch and get the facilities for free. They are very flexible in what they can offer you.
  • Sanbis Resort – Diving and Snorkelling off the resort. This is an adult-only resort so no kids are allowed.
  • Imagination Island – For snorkelling, local dining experiences and more.
  • Leleana Resort

Getting Connected

The internet connection is reasonably fast now unlike twenty years ago when I was living here full-time, and had to pay $50 SBD (£5) per hour using the only computer available to the country at the main Solomon Telekom Branch in Honiara. These days most people own a mobile phone with amazingly cheap pay-as-you-go options from the local mobile Telekom and Digicel.

Pre-paid Simcards are available at Telekom at Panatina Plaza ( half-way drive into town). You can;t miss it as there is only one highly in Honiara.

Transport

Taxis are available at the airport on arrival should you need one. If you have a connecting flight to the other islands, Solomon Airlines will be able to transfer you on their shuttle service on arrival. If you miss you connection, it helps to make a complaint as Solomon Airlines is very good in compensating.

Car Rental

Car rental options are available at the airport on arrival. The Henderson International Airport is very small so this is hard to miss.
